OLD TESTAMENT EXEGESIS AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS (ADVANCED LEVEL)
The Institute for Hebrew Language and Literature offers an advanced specialist course in Old Testament Exegesis and Linguistic Analysis, designed for students who have completed higher levels of Biblical Hebrew and wish to move toward professional-level interpretation of biblical texts.
This course follows advanced academic and Israeli-style programs in Biblical Hebrew and exegesis, where the focus shifts from language acquisition to systematic analysis, interpretation, and philological work with original texts.
The course lasts four months and is held twice a week via Zoom.
The program begins on June 16, 2027.
Entry Requirements
Enrollment in this course requires:
- completion of Biblical Hebrew Bet Level or equivalent
or - strong intermediate to advanced knowledge of Biblical Hebrew
All candidates without formal certification will undergo a short assessment via WhatsApp call to determine their level.
Course Content
This course represents a transition from language study to analytical and interpretative work with the Old Testament in the original Hebrew.
Following advanced academic and Israeli methodological approaches, the program includes:
- detailed reading of Old Testament passages in Hebrew
- grammatical and morphological analysis of the text
- syntactic and structural analysis of sentences and narratives
- introduction to philological methodology
- contextual interpretation within historical and cultural frameworks
- analysis of key Hebrew terms and their semantic range
- identification of literary structures (parallelism, repetition, narrative flow)
- comparison of different translation approaches
- introduction to textual variants (basic level)
- understanding how meaning is shaped through language structure
A central part of the course is line-by-line analysis of selected biblical passages, allowing students to move beyond translation toward deep understanding of the text.
Course Structure and Expectations
This is an intensive and demanding course, intended for serious students aiming for advanced competence in Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament studies.
Participants are expected to dedicate 30–45 minutes of daily study at home in addition to live sessions.
All participants receive complete course literature in PDF format free of charge, including:
- selected biblical texts
- analytical materials
- grammatical references
- guided exercises
The course prepares students for advanced research, including textual criticism, Qumran studies, and specialized manuscript analysis.

Instructor
The course is led by Prof. Željko Stanojević, Hebrew linguist and biblical philologist, specializing in Biblical Hebrew, textual analysis, and the study of ancient Hebrew manuscripts.
