Abstract

This study presents a philological and text-critical analysis of Column 3 of the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa), focusing on orthographic variation, scribal practices, and textual structure. The analysis examines patterns of spelling variation, corrections, additions, omissions, and spacing phenomena, alongside a diplomatic translation reflecting the structure of the Qumran manuscript. The study shows that most differences from the Masoretic Text can be explained through systematic orthographic and scribal practices, while a smaller number of variants may reflect alternative textual traditions.

Description

This work represents the third unit within a broader research project dedicated to the analysis of all 54 columns of the Great Isaiah Scroll. Column 3 is examined through a combined philological and text-critical approach, with emphasis on orthographic variation and scribal intervention.

The analysis focuses on spelling variation, corrections, insertions, omissions, and structural features such as spacing. Particular attention is given to differences between the Qumran text and the Masoretic Text in morphology, suffixation, and lexical forms.

In addition to linguistic analysis, the study provides a diplomatic translation of the column, preserving the structural and textual characteristics of the manuscript.
