Abstract

This study presents a detailed analysis of Column 1 of the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa), focusing on orthographic variation, scribal features, and linguistic structure. The research examines patterns of spelling, use of matres lectionis, and indications of scribal practice within the Qumran manuscript. The study also includes a translation of the analyzed text, supported by philological and contextual interpretation. The analysis contributes to the understanding of Qumran Hebrew and its relationship to the Masoretic Text.

Description

This work represents the first part of a broader research project dedicated to the comprehensive analysis of all 54 columns of the Great Isaiah Scroll. Column 1 is examined through a combined philological and linguistic approach, with particular attention to orthographic features and patterns of textual variation.

The study explores the interaction between consonantal text and vocalization tendencies, as reflected in Qumran orthography, and evaluates the extent to which these features correspond to or diverge from the Masoretic tradition.

In addition to linguistic analysis, the work provides a structured translation of the column, integrating textual observations with interpretative insights. The study establishes a methodological framework that is applied consistently across subsequent columns in the series.

This study forms part of a larger project analyzing all 54 columns of the Great Isaiah Scroll
