Academic Profile
Prof. Dr. Nihad Hasan Al-Shammary is Professor of Semitic Languages and Oriental Studies at Wasit University, Iraq. His research focuses on Hebrew language, Samaritan studies, comparative Semitic linguistics, Biblical Hebrew, Judaeo-Arabic literature, and the history and archaeology of the Ancient Near East. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Lark Journal for Philosophy, Linguistics and Social Sciences and previously served as Head of the Department of Oriental Studies at Wasit University (2015–2017).
Professor Al-Shammary is among the leading Iraqi scholars working in Hebrew and Semitic studies. His work bridges Hebrew, Arabic, Samaritan, Aramaic, and other Semitic traditions through philological, historical, and comparative linguistic approaches. His scholarship includes critical editions of Samaritan manuscripts, studies of Biblical texts, and research into the interaction between Jewish and Islamic intellectual traditions.

RESEARCH
Professor Al-Shammary’s research explores the historical development of Semitic languages, especially Hebrew, Samaritan Hebrew, Judaeo-Arabic, and Aramaic. His work combines historical linguistics, philology, manuscript studies, archaeology, and textual criticism to investigate the transmission of biblical and Samaritan traditions.
A major focus of his scholarship is the Samaritan Pentateuch and Samaritan manuscript tradition. He has produced critical editions of medieval Samaritan grammatical works and numerous comparative studies between the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Masoretic Text, and the Septuagint. His research also investigates Jewish intellectual history, the linguistic interaction between Hebrew and Arabic, and the role of Semitic languages in preserving the cultural heritage of the Middle East.
