Academic Profile
Prof. Dr. Emanuel Tov is J. L. Magnes Professor of Bible Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and one of the world’s leading scholars in the fields of Biblical textual criticism, Dead Sea Scrolls research, and Septuagint studies.
He is internationally recognized for his fundamental contributions to the study of the textual transmission of the Hebrew Bible. His research has shaped modern understanding of the relationship between the Masoretic Text, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint, and other ancient biblical witnesses.
Prof. Tov served as Editor-in-Chief of the Dead Sea Scrolls Publication Project, overseeing the publication of the complete corpus of the Qumran scrolls. His work established important methodological foundations for modern textual criticism and biblical philology.
Throughout his career, he has combined traditional philological methods with digital humanities and computational approaches, including the development of electronic databases and tools for the comparative study of biblical manuscripts.

RESEARCH
Prof. Tov’s research focuses on the textual history of the Hebrew Bible and the transmission of biblical texts throughout antiquity.
A central area of his scholarship is the relationship between different biblical textual traditions, including the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint, the Samaritan Pentateuch, and the biblical manuscripts discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls.
His work on Qumran manuscripts and the Dead Sea Scrolls Publication Project has provided scholars worldwide with access to previously unpublished biblical manuscripts and transformed the modern study of ancient Judaism and biblical literature.
Prof. Tov has also made major contributions to the study of computerized tools for biblical research, including the Computer Assisted Tools for Septuagint Studies (CATSS) project and electronic databases for the analysis of ancient biblical texts.
