ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes the etymology, cultural background, and distribution of the personal name Nedeljko among South Slavs. Special attention is devoted to the relationship between the name and the Slavic term nedelja (“Sunday” / “day of rest”), as well as to the religious and sociolinguistic dimensions of traditional naming practices. The study also examines regional and dialectal variants such as Nedjeljko, Nediljko, and Nedelko, together with the historical spread of the name in Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, and Bulgarian linguistic areas. The paper demonstrates that the name Nedeljko represents an important example of the interaction between language, religion, folk tradition, and cultural identity among South Slavs.

Ovaj rad analizira etimologiju, kulturnu pozadinu i rasprostiranje ličnog imena Nedeljko među Južnim Slovenima. Posebna pažnja posvećena je vezi između imena i slovenske reči „nedelja“, kao i religijskim i sociolingvističkim aspektima tradicionalnog sistema imenovanja. Rad obrađuje i regionalne i dijalekatske varijante imena kao što su Nedjeljko, Nediljko i Nedelko, zajedno sa istorijskim rasprostiranjem imena na srpskom, hrvatskom, bosanskom, crnogorskom, makedonskom i bugarskom jezičkom prostoru. Analiza pokazuje da ime Nedeljko predstavlja značajan primer međusobnog delovanja jezika, religije, narodne tradicije i kulturnog identiteta među Južnim Slovenima.

ABOUT THE STUDY
Etimologija i načini rasprostiranja imena Nedeljko kod Južnih Slovena, translated into English as The Etymology and Patterns of Distribution of the Name Nedeljko among South Slavs, is a scholarly study by Željko Stanojević devoted to the origin, meaning, formation, cultural background, dialectal variants, and geographical distribution of the South Slavic personal name Nedeljko.
The study examines Nedeljko as a traditional South Slavic anthroponym derived from the Slavic noun nedelja, meaning “Sunday” and, historically, “a day on which no work is performed.” It analyzes the relationship between the personal name Nedeljko, the Christian understanding of Sunday as a day of worship and rest, and traditional South Slavic naming customs.
Particular attention is given to the formation of the name through the South Slavic suffix -ko and to its place within traditional systems of personal naming. The study considers the historical practice of giving the name Nedeljko or Nedeljka to children born on a Sunday and discusses the religious, protective, symbolic, familial, and cultural functions associated with this naming tradition.

Through an interdisciplinary approach combining etymology, onomastics, anthroponymy, dialectology, sociolinguistics, religious history, and cultural studies, the paper demonstrates that the name Nedeljko represents an important linguistic and cultural witness to the historical identity of the South Slavs.
WHAT DOES THE NAME NEDELJKO MEAN?
The personal name Nedeljko is etymologically connected with the South Slavic word nedelja, meaning “Sunday” and, in its older etymological sense, “the day on which one does not work” or “a day of rest.”
The Slavic word nedelja is traditionally analyzed as a formation composed of the negative particle ne, meaning “not,” and the verb delati, meaning “to work” or “to do.” The personal name Nedeljko was formed from this lexical base with the productive South Slavic personal-name suffix -ko.
In traditional South Slavic culture, the name Nedeljko was frequently associated with a male child born on a Sunday. The corresponding female form is Nedeljka.
Because Sunday occupies a central place in Christian religious life as the day of Christ’s resurrection, worship, rest, and communal gathering, the name also developed symbolic associations with blessing, protection, peace, family continuity, religious identity, and cultural tradition.
ŠTA ZNAČI IME NEDELJKO?
Ime Nedeljko etimološki je povezano sa slovenskom rečju „nedelja“, koja označava nedelju kao dan odmora i hrišćanskog bogosluženja.
U starijem etimološkom značenju reč „nedelja“ označavala je „dan kada se ne dela“, odnosno „dan kada se ne radi“. Ime Nedeljko nastalo je od ove osnove dodavanjem produktivnog južnoslovenskog antroponimijskog nastavka -ko.
U tradicionalnoj kulturi Južnih Slovena ime Nedeljko često je davano muškom detetu rođenom u nedelju. Odgovarajući ženski oblik jeste Nedeljka.
Zbog posebnog mesta nedelje u hrišćanskoj tradiciji, ime je steklo i simboličke veze sa odmorom, blagoslovom, zaštitom, mirom, porodičnom tradicijom i religijskim identitetom.
ORIGIN AND ETYMOLOGY OF THE NAME NEDELJKO
The name Nedeljko belongs to the group of traditional South Slavic personal names formed from the native Slavic lexical stock. It was not directly borrowed from Biblical Hebrew, Greek, Latin, or another foreign language.
Its lexical base is the South Slavic noun nedelja. The word originally referred to a day on which ordinary work was not performed and later became the standard name for Sunday in a number of Slavic languages.
The suffix -ko is one of the most productive suffixes in South Slavic male personal names. It originally had hypocoristic, diminutive, familiar, or protective functions but later became an independent anthroponymic formation pattern.
The structure of the name may therefore be presented as:
nedelja + -ko → Nedeljko
The name combines a native Slavic lexical base with Christian religious symbolism and traditional South Slavic naming practices.

Ime Nedeljko pripada grupi tradicionalnih južnoslovenskih ličnih imena nastalih iz izvornog slovenskog leksičkog fonda. Ono nije neposredno preuzeto iz biblijskog hebrejskog, grčkog, latinskog ili nekog drugog stranog jezika.
Njegovu leksičku osnovu čini južnoslovenska imenica „nedelja“. Ova reč je prvobitno označavala dan tokom kojeg se ne obavlja uobičajeni rad, a kasnije je postala naziv za nedelju kao sedmični hrišćanski dan odmora i bogosluženja.
Sufiks -ko jedan je od najproduktivnijih nastavaka u tvorbi južnoslovenskih muških ličnih imena. Prvobitno je mogao imati hipokorističku, deminutivnu, prisnu ili zaštitnu funkciju, ali je vremenom postao samostalan antroponimijski tvorbeni model.

nedelja + -ko → Nedeljko
Ime tako povezuje izvornu slovensku leksičku osnovu, hrišćansku religijsku simboliku i tradicionalni južnoslovenski način davanja imena.

In traditional South Slavic communities, the day on which a child was born could influence the choice of the child’s name. A boy born on Sunday could be named Nedeljko, while a girl could receive the name Nedeljka.
Sunday was understood as a sacred day connected with:

rest from ordinary work;
family and communal gathering;
religious blessing;
protection and peace.
The name therefore functioned not only as a personal identifier but also as a marker of family memory, cultural continuity, religious affiliation, and regional identity.

During the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, the name Nedeljko was relatively common in traditional and rural South Slavic communities.
