Academic Profile
Dr. Cyrill von Büttner is Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at the Faculty of Philology of Saint Petersburg State University. His research focuses on the textual history of the Hebrew Bible, biblical philology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Qumran manuscripts, the Septuagint, and the literary and linguistic analysis of Biblical Hebrew.
His scholarship combines textual criticism, philology, manuscript studies, and historical linguistics to investigate the transmission of biblical texts and the development of the Hebrew Bible. He is particularly known for his work on the Isaiah Scroll from Qumran, the textual history of Isaiah, the Song of Songs, and ancient Hebrew poetry.
In addition to his research, Dr. von Büttner serves as reviewer and editor for scholarly publications in biblical studies and regularly participates in international conferences devoted to Hebrew Bible, textual criticism, and Second Temple Judaism.

RESEARCH
Dr. von Büttner’s research investigates the textual development of the Hebrew Bible through close philological analysis of Hebrew manuscripts, the Septuagint, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. His work contributes to understanding the evolution of biblical texts during the Second Temple period and the transmission of the Hebrew Scriptures.
A significant portion of his scholarship focuses on Isaiah, the Song of Songs, and other poetic texts of the Hebrew Bible. His studies frequently combine textual criticism with linguistic and literary analysis, offering new readings of difficult biblical passages and Qumran manuscripts. He has also published research on the Letter of Aristeas and Jewish textual traditions of the Hellenistic period.
